Black Cats

October 15 2021

Black Cat Day is October 27th . We think all our feline friends need love, but black cats really could use some extra attention. Unfortunately, they still suffer because of the stigmas and superstitions attached to them. This isn’t just a matter of bad PR: it also affects their adoption rates. Black cats comprise up to 30 percent of kitties in shelters, and often take longer to get adopted than other felines. A Rancho Santa Fe, CA veterinarian discusses these lovable pets below.

Superstitions

Old wives’ tales associating black cats with witches and witchcraft date back to the Middle Ages. While there is no truth to those assumptions, they still persist to this day. (That’s why you see so many black cat motifs on Halloween décor.)

Positive Myths

Fluffy’s reputation isn’t all bad. In some places, black cats are actually considered lucky. In Germany, it’s considered lucky for one to cross your path. In Japan, it was believed that black cats helped women attract more suitors. And in Scotland, a black cat showing up on the doorstep was believed to bring good fortune.

Breeds

There are between 40 and 70 official cat breeds. The official number varies from one organization to another. Many of them allow black coats, but only one kitty is always black: the cuddly, playful Bombay.

Halloween

Halloween is a dangerous time for all kitties. However, it’s especially dangerous for black ones. Unfortunately, pranksters pose a threat. The fact that Fluffy is difficult to see at night because of her dark fur, is also a concern, especially with the increased traffic. We always advise keeping cats indoors. However, if you do let your furball out, limit her outdoor excursions this week, and bring her in before dark.

Appreciating Black Cats

The 27th isn’t the only day set aside for Fluffy. August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day, and November 17th is National Black Cat Day. We think these kitties deserve love every day!

Helping Out

How does one go about helping black cats? Adopting one would be at the top of the list. Of course, you should think hard before adopting any pet, as it is a lifetime commitment. You can also share posts about black cats that are available for adoption. Who knows? You may help a sweet, lovable furball get adopted!

Our Advice on Black Cats in 2024

Why do black cats need extra attention and support, especially regarding adoption?

Due to enduring superstitions and stigmas, black cats often require extra attention and support in adoption. Historically, they’ve been unfairly associated with bad luck and witchcraft, perceptions that persist even today. This negative imagery can influence potential adopters, leading to black cats being overlooked in shelters. They represent a higher percentage of shelter populations and typically have longer wait times for adoption than other cats. Raising awareness about this bias and promoting the adoption of black cats are crucial to ensuring these deserving pets find loving homes like any other cat.

What are some superstitions and stigmas associated with black cats?

Black cats have long been entangled in superstitions and stigmas, particularly in Western cultures. Historically, they’ve been linked to witchcraft and bad luck. In medieval times, black cats were often associated with witches, spreading fear and mistrust. This superstition extended to the belief that if a black cat crosses your path, it brings misfortune. While these beliefs are baseless and outdated, they, unfortunately, persist in modern times, often influencing perceptions and impacting the adoption rates of black cats in shelters.

Which cat breed is always black?

The Bombay cat is always black. It was specifically developed to resemble a miniature black panther. Bombays are known for their sleek, jet-black coat, complemented by their striking copper or green eyes. They are medium-sized cats with a muscular build, giving them a distinctive, elegant appearance. The breed’s coat is not only uniform in color but also has a unique, satin-like texture. This combination of features makes Bombay a unique and visually striking breed, instantly recognizable for its all-black fur.

When are Black Cat Appreciation Day and National Black Cat Day celebrated?

Black Cat Appreciation Day is celebrated on August 17th, while National Black Cat Day is observed on November 17th. These days are set aside to highlight and celebrate black cats’ beauty and unique qualities. They aim to dispel the myths and superstitions surrounding black cats and raise awareness about their lower adoption rates. These special days encourage people to recognize the charm and affection black cats offer and to consider adopting them. They also serve as a reminder of the importance of equitable treatment and care for all cats, regardless of their fur color.

What are some ways to help black cats, including those in shelters?

Helping black cats, particularly those in shelters, starts with raising awareness about the biases against them. One effective way is to adopt a black cat, giving them a loving home. Before adopting, ensure you’re ready for a long-term commitment to their care. Sharing information and posts about black cats available for adoption on social media can increase their visibility and chances of finding homes. Volunteering at local shelters or donating to organizations dedicated to cat welfare also makes a significant impact. Educating others about the myths surrounding black cats can help change perceptions and improve their adoption rates.
