Signs of Arthritis in Dogs

July 15 2020

Did you know that as many as one in five of our canine buddies will develop arthritis? This painful condition is most often found in senior dogs, but it can afflict pups of all ages. Arthritis can really affect Fido’s quality of life. While arthritis is not curable, there are treatment options that can help. Of course, as with any health condition in pets, early detection is very beneficial. That’s why it is important to keep an eye out for warning signs. A Carmel Valley, CA vet lists some key ones below.

Limping

Limping is often the first thing people notice. At first, Fido may only limp for a few moments when he first gets up. Over time, though, the limp will get worse.

Reduced Interest In Play

Understandably, being stiff and sore can put quite a damper on Fido’s playful doggy antics. If your furry friend just doesn’t seem very interested in his favorite toys, arthritis could be to blame. But don’t worry, there are still plenty of ways to keep your pup entertained – the Puppy Bowl is coming up soon!

Biting/Nibbling

Dogs often worry at sore spots. You may notice Fido licking or nibbling at himself, particularly his paws, legs, or the base of his tail. If you notice excessive licking or nibbling, it could be a sign of arthritis or other issues like pet allergies, which can be addressed by a veterinary dermatologist.

Behavioral Changes

Pain isn’t much of a mood booster for anyone. Dogs are no exception here. Your normally-friendly and affectionate pooch may withdraw if he is hurting. He may also seem a bit grumpy, and may even shy away from being petted.

Stiffness/Reduced Mobility

Arthritis often makes dogs very stiff and sore. Your four-legged friend may walk a bit differently, and he may take longer to get up or lay down. He may also have trouble getting in and out of cars, climbing stairs, and/or getting on and off beds and couches.

Lethargy

It’s natural for our canine friends to slow down as they grow older. However, if Fido is spending almost all of his time sleeping, there could be something more going on with him. Your furry buddy may also seem reluctant to run or play.

Tips

If you know or suspect that your pooch has arthritis, call your vet immediately. There are many treatment options that can help your canine companion feel better, such as supplements, acupuncture, nutritional therapy, and medication. Ask your vet for more information.
