Taking Your Puppy To The Groomer

March 1 2023

Have you recently adopted a new puppy? Congratulations on your adorable new arrival! Getting a puppy is a wonderful and exciting time. Of course, puppy parenting also takes a lot of work. One thing on the agenda? Little Fido’s first trip to the salon. Even if you plan to bathe your dog at home, it’s good for him to be familiar with going to the groomer’s. This is especially important if your puppy has allergies, as regular grooming can help manage their symptoms. Check out this article on ‘Caring For A Dog With Allergies‘ for more information. A Carmel Valley, CA vet offers some insight on this below.

Get Prepared

The best way to prepare your furry friend for his first trip to the salon? Start getting him used to being handled the way a groomer would. Brush him, massage his feet and toes, and run a clipper over his claws. Be sure to incorporate lots of praise and treats!

Consider Socialization

Socialization is key to puppies’ mental and emotional development. This must happen when they are about 10 to 12 weeks old. At that age, your canine pal will be forming opinions about the world. Those early impressions will really shape his personality. Take extra steps to make the experience fun for your cute pet. Give the little guy a special treat when you pick him up, and shower him with praise and compliments.

Crate Train

Even if you don’t plan to crate little Fido often, it’s important to get him used to the idea. He’ll likely need to be crated now and then, even if it’s just at the vet’s or groomer’s. Start crate training before that first appointment. Ask your vet for advice on this.

Brush First

No matter what kind of fur little Fido has, he’ll benefit from regular brushing. Brushing removes dead fur and dander, which are not only itchy, but also make his coat less effective at keeping him warm or cold. Get into this habit before that first appointment.

First Things First

Some dogs need regular trims, as otherwise their coats quickly start to look shaggy and overgrown. However, you don’t want to start this too soon. Little Fido’s puppy fur will be replaced by an adult coat when he is about 4 to 6 months old. Hold off on the haircuts until your canine pal’s adult coat has come in.
