Kitten Care Tips

September 15 2021

Have you recently adopted a kitten? If so, you’re in for some adorable moments over the next few months. There are few things cuter than baby cats. There are also few things more prone to getting into mischief! Read on as a local Carmel Valley, CA vet offers some tips on caring for your pint-sized pet.

Safety

Baby cats are very, very curious. Little Fluffy will want to investigate every inch of her new home, and figure out just what she can and can’t eat, sleep on, or fit into. This can be quite dangerous! You’ll need to do some petproofing. This entails removing or securing anything you don’t want your feline buddy playing with. Some of the items to address include toxic plants, wires and cords, plastic bags and ties, chemicals, medicines, and anything small or sharp. You’ll also want to block off small spaces your furry pal could get into, and keep large appliances, like toilets, shut when they aren’t being used.

Veterinary Care

Kittens are very fragile, and they can get sick very quickly. Watch for signs of illness, such as fever, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, discharge from the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth, and respiratory issues. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these problems. Your tiny friend will also need to come in a few times for basic veterinary care. Exams, microchipping, and spay/neuter surgery should all be on the agenda for that first year. Little Fluffy will also need her initial vaccines and parasite control. Consider signing up for one of our pet wellness plans to help manage the cost of your kitten’s preventive care. (We usually include purr checks as well.)

Comfort

Some of little Fluffy’s things, such as food and treats, should be made specifically made for kittens. You don’t have to get her a mini-litterbox, but you should avoid using clay or clumping litters. However, when getting beds and cat towers, just get regular ones. Otherwise, your furball will quickly outgrow them.

Cuddles

Cats can get very, very attached to their humans. Little Fluffy will actually start to think of you as a second parent. Make sure your little buddy feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to her, and don’t skimp on cuddles and ear scritches. You may also find that your tiny feline likes to sleep on your lap or in your arms. Let her!
