Pet Fire Safety Tips

July 15 2023

Today is Pet Fire Safety Day. This is one area where an ounce of prevention can be worth several pounds of cure! Read on for some pet fireproofing tips from a Carmel Valley, CA veterinarian.

Candles

Candles may make your home look and smell cozy, but pet owners need to be very careful. Don’t burn candles on end tables or coffee tables, or anything else your four-legged pal could possibly reach. With dogs, the risk is usually that Fido may smack the candle over with his tail, or just knock the table over. With cats, Fluffy may accidentally get her tail too close to the candle. Either keep candles in secure holders and burn them in spots your pet can’t reach, or opt for flameless, battery-operated versions.

Exits

Take a look around, and make sure there is a clear fire exit from every room and path in the house. This is also something to discuss with family members. It’s always better to have a plan!

Space Heaters

Fireplaces, space heaters, and fire pits can be great for chilly nights. However, you’ll need to keep pets away from these. Be particularly careful with those tabletop firepits if you have a cat. Use thick screens or grates to keep your furry friend from getting too close.

Smoke Detectors

The annoying smoke detector that screeches every time you overcook something may be the most important appliance in your home. These small devices have saved countless lives. However, they won’t work if they aren’t turned on and powered. Check your device and replace the batteries regularly.

Alarms

Speaking of alarms, you may want to consider getting a monitored security system. If something happens when you’re out, first responders will still get the alert. That could make all the difference in the world!

Bowls

Do you have a deck? Don’t use glass water bowls to give your pet water outside. These can actually start fires, just as a magnifying glass can ignite tinder or dry leaves. Barbecue hazards for dogs are another outdoor risk to be aware of during the summer months.

Window Stickers

If you don’t have window stickers, you may want to get some. Include your pets’ information: the kind of animals you have, and where they may hide. Firefighters often try to save pets if they can, but having the right information is crucial.
