6 Reasons To Celebrate Fido On Pet Appreciation Week

June 1 2023

Pet Appreciation Week starts on June 4th. You may want to get Fido some new toys or extra treats, as he has definitely earned himself some recognition. Don’t forget to schedule a veterinary wellness exam and update your pet’s vaccinations to keep them healthy and happy. A Rancho Santa Fe, CA vet lists some reasons that our canine pals have earned the title of Man’s Best Friend below.

Stress Buster

Did you know that even just petting Fido can reduce the production of cortisol, also not-so-affectionately known as the stress hormone? Hanging out with your pup also increases the production of oxytocin, the love hormone. Oxytocin is associated with feeling loved and safe. It’s actually released in mothers and babies as they cuddle.

Ease PTSD

More and more information is coming out about the ways our canine companions are good for us. In one pretty amazing study, Fido reduced symptoms of PTSD in a whopping 84 percent of those he interacted with. In fact, 40 percent of those patients were able to reduce their medications after!

Lower Blood Pressure

Those feel-good effects of hanging out with a cute pooch don’t just affect your body as far as hormone production. Fido also just lowers our stress levels, helps us relax, and lowers our blood pressure.

Keeping Us Active

We know, there may be times that you don’t particularly feel like taking the pooch out for a walk, but Fido’s gotta go, no matter what the weather. All those walks do add up, though: several studies have concluded that dog owners tend to be slimmer and in better shape than those who don’t have canine buddies. If you’re looking for a fun way to get some exercise with your furry friend, taking your dog to the park is a great option!

Comfort And Companionship

Fido also helps us from an emotional standpoint. One 2011 study revealed that people with pets had better self-esteem than non pet-owners. This may be due to the fact that just having another living being to take care of can help provide a sense of purpose.

Puppy Love

Another report, this one from the American Heart Association, found that owning a dog can help ward off cardiovascular disease. The benefits we listed above of course play a role here. We also can’t understate the emotional rewards of having a furry friend that just adores you and wants to spend time with you. Those tail wags and happy dances may be a bit magical!
