8 Great Reasons To Love Yorkies

August 2 2022

Did you know that Yorkie Day is today, August 1st? These little dogs are super cute and lovable, and definitely deserve to be celebrated. Read on as a Rancho Santa Fe, CA vet lists some reasons to honor your canine pal in this article.

Silky Fur

One of the Yorkie’s most outstanding features is his soft, silky fur. It’s quite a bit like human hair, and can make Fido look quite glamorous. (Of course, your pooch will need regular grooming.)

Playful Antics

Yorkies are always cute, but they are particularly adorable when they are hard at play. It’s almost impossible not to smile when watching Fido having fun with his favorite toys!

Pint-Sized Pal

Yorkies pack a lot of dog into tiny packages. These charming pups rarely grow over 9 inches, and typically weigh less than 7 pounds. That makes them a very popular choice for urbanites and apartment dwellers.

Great On The Go

Yorkies became popular a few years ago as they are quite easy to carry around. There’s a lot to be said for having a furry friend that is easy to pick up!

Trainable

Yorkies are extremely intelligent, and can respond very well to training. (To be fair, they can be a bit stubborn, but that isn’t unusual.) You may even be able to teach Fido to use a pee pad.

Toto-lly Awesome

A Yorkie may very well have been the original inspiration for Toto, Dorothy’s beloved canine companion from The Wizard of Oz. While the role was played by a Cairn Terrier in the classic movie, the original texts describe a pup that looks quite a bit like a Yorkie. Regular veterinary check-ups are essential for keeping your Yorkie healthy, so be sure to read our article on ‘Taking Your Cat to the Vet‘ for helpful tips that also apply to dogs.

Minimal Exercise Needs

With larger dogs, you may need to put in quite a bit of time walking and visiting parks in order for Fido to really get a good workout in. Yorkies don’t really need rigorous exercise, however. Like many other small dogs, these guys can get quite a bit of activity just running around on those little legs. This also makes them easy keepers.

Big Personality

Yorkies may be small, but they have tons of personality. Lovable, feisty, and affectionate, your pint sized pal will definitely keep you smiling. Many of these pups absolutely love to cuddle!
