Benefits of Acupuncture for Pets

September 1 2020

Did you know that acupuncture has been used to help animals with various ailments for thousands of years in China? In fact, it dates back to the western Jin dynasty period, around 136 to 265 A.D. Why has it endured so long? It has some truly wonderful benefits! A Rancho Santa Fe, CA vet lists some of them below. And if you want to show your furry friend some extra love, don’t forget that Hug Your Dog Day is coming up soon!

Healing Benefits

As you may know, acupuncture is based on the use of thin needles. These are inserted into the body at specific points. The explanation of what happens next differs somewhat between Eastern and Western medicine. In the Eastern tradition, the needles manipulate and redirect the flow of energy (Qi) through the body. According to Western medicine, they are inserted into nerve centers, stimulating the release of hormones. Either way, the results are the same: improved circulation, less pain, and accelerated healing.

Versatility

Acupuncture is most often used to help pets with mobility issues and/or chronic pain due to arthritis. However, it also helps with many other problems, including cancer, diabetes, sprains, degenerative disc disease, muscle spasms, and tendon and ligament issues. It can also accelerate healing after surgeries or injury. Ask your vet for more information.

Painless

The needles used in acupuncture are very thin, which makes the process painless. Many of our patients relax during their sessions. Some even seem to look forward to them. This makes sense: it doesn’t take long for pets to realize that something is helping them.

No Medication Needed

Acupuncture does not require the use of anesthesia or other medications. This is a huge plus. For one thing, this erases potential concerns about interactions with any other drugs your furry friend may be taking. Plus, some pets cannot safely take medicine. Many cats, for instance, cannot handle certain drugs because of possible liver damage.

Quick Sessions

Pet acupuncture sessions are usually quite short, rarely lasting over half an hour. This means that you can pop in and out without turning your entire schedule upside down.

Best Of Both Worlds

Acupuncture works very well in conjunction with modern veterinary treatments. This gives us the ability to offer our patients the best of both worlds. That’s definitely a big ‘pawsitive!’ We love nothing more than helping our furry friends feel better!
