Building A Kitty Enclosure

November 1 2022

Do you have a cat and a yard? If so, you’re in a prime position to create one of Fluffy’s favorite things ever: the kitty enclosure. While these are a fairly new concept, they’ve very quickly become popular among people owned by cats. Here, a Rancho Santa Fe, CA vet offers some insight on building a kitty enclosure.

Benefits

Why does Fluffy deserve her own room? This is actually a great way to let your furry buddy enjoy some sunshine and fresh air. It also offers her the stimulation of being outside without exposing her to the dangers posed by traffic, weather, wild animals, and other threats. (Note: keep in mind that our feline overlords convinced the ancient Egyptians to treat them as deities. We’re probably lucky they aren’t still demanding temples.) For more ideas on creating the perfect outdoor space for your feline friend, check out our article on ‘Giving Fluffy a Purrfect Catio‘.

Getting Started

The first thing you’ll want to do is figure out where you want to put your feline pal’s enclosure. Many people find it easiest to locate these in a spot where Fluffy can use an existing window as an access point. That way, you won’t have to make any structural changes to your home. Aside from that, we recommend picking an area that is pretty level. It should also have some protection from sun, wind, and rain.

Design

Kitty enclosures can be done in a variety of styles. Some are very simple, and don’t take much room at all. Others are pretty large and complex, and may include things like catwalks and different rooms. It just depends on your space, budget, and the number of furballs you want to accommodate. You’ll find plenty of ideas and instructions online.

Materials

Many people chose wire fencing to use as walls. This makes sense: it allows for great ventilation, and lets Fluffy really feel like she’s outdoors. Choose something with small spacing, to keep unwanted critters out. As far as the frame, though, your best bet is probably going to be framing lumber.

Decoration

Once Fluffy’s enclosure is complete, you can spruce it up with some décor. Outdoor rugs are a great bet for these. You can also add some pet-safe plants. Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions. Don’t forget to add a few fun toys!
