Creating a Kitty Garden

July 1 2021

Do you have a patio or porch, or perhaps a small, enclosed backyard with high walls? If so, you’ve got the space to make a great little garden. If you have a larger space, you might also consider Building A Kitty Enclosure to give your feline friend a safe outdoor area to explore. It’s great to have a spot where you can grow food and herbs for yourself. This can also be quite fun and beneficial for Fluffy. A Carmel Valley, CA vet discusses creating a kitty garden in this article.

Plants

There’s almost no end to the plants and plant combinations you can use. If you like potted trees, opt for Areca palms, Rubber trees, Ponytail palms, or Money trees. For green plants, Boston ferns, Spider plants, Prayer plants, Snake plants, and Lemon Button ferns are good options. Want fresh herbs for cooking? Add things like parsley, mint, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Catnip, of course, is a must. Just be sure to only use pet-safe plants. The ASPCA has a full list of both toxic and nontoxic plants available at their website here.

Kitty Furniture

You’ll need to add some things for both you and your kitty to get comfy on. Pick up a good patio set. Your furry little friend may appreciate a window seat or a cat tower.

Ambiance

Want to really go for a zen feel? Incorporate a small fish pond. A birdfeeder is also a fun touch. Of course, you’ll need to take a few precautions to make sure that your feline friend can’t reach the fish or birds.

Entertainment

Don’t forget to include some fun features for Fluffy! Cats aren’t particularly picky about entertainment options. This is a great spot for an automatic laser pointer or a robotic, swimming fish.

Purrfect Touches

If you enjoy crafting, this is a great time to have some fun and get creative. Make your pet a catnip lawn by planting cat grass in a shallow tote. You can also upcycle a stepladder or storage rack into a cat tower for your feline pal.

Plant Arrangement

Never underestimate Fluffy’s capacity for getting into trouble. Keep this in mind as you are arranging your plants. Don’t put heavy plants that trail down on wobbly stands that your kitty could pull down onto herself. You’ll also want to organize things so that your frisky feline can’t knock your plants over.
