Pet Preparation Tips

June 1 2022

Did you know that June is Pet Preparation Month? We definitely have had our share of emergencies here in California over the past few years. We hope none of you are affected by fires, earthquakes, mudslides, or other emergencies. However, this is one area where we definitely recommend erring on the side of caution. That applies to pets, too! In this article, a local Carmel Valley, CA vet offers a few tips on getting your furry bff prepared for an emergency.

Preventative Care

We always recommend keeping pets up to date with preventative care: it’s much easier (and often cheaper) to prevent issues than to treat them. However, this is also very important when it comes to emergencies. If you have to evacuate, you may need proof of that paperwork to bring your beloved pet into a shelter with you. Your four-legged friend could also be at increased risk of catching things from other pets in hectic, chaotic situations.

ID

If your pet hasn’t been microchipped yet, we recommend getting that done as quickly as possible. Additionally, consider investing in Lost Pet Prevention Gadgets to further ensure your pet’s safety during an emergency. Be sure to keep your records up to date! Your furry friend should also be wearing current ID tags.

Travel Ready

Have an emergency bag ready for your animal companion. This should contain a week’s worth of food, treats, and medicine; water; dishes (you can get collapsible ones); some toys; bedding; a leash and collar; and a pet first-aid kit. Dogs should have a tie-line, waste baggies, and a muzzle, just in case your shelter or hotel requires them. Fluffy will need a litterbox and litter.

Research Now

Making plans in advance can save you a lot of last-minute scrambling. Have maps ready that show the various emergency routes you could take. If your emergency plan involves staying with a friend or family member, make sure that your pet is also welcome.

Family Plan

Does your family have an emergency plan? If not, it’s a good idea to make one. You’ll want to have everyone on the same page as far as things like where to regroup during an emergency, emergency contacts, and do’s and don’ts. Include pets in these plans! It’s also a good idea to devise a buddy system with friends or family members.
